Summary
A tall cylindrical amphora with angular shoulders, long straight handles and a collar rim. This form is the most important Italian wine amphora of the late Republican period, with a wide distribution around the Mediterranean (with many examples from shipwrecks) and across the north-west provinces.

Bibliography

  • A series of papers in the proceedings of the SFECAG congres at Istres discuss the dating and distribution of Dressel 1 amphoras in Gaul (Maza 1998; Desbat 1998; Poux and Selles 1998). Desbat makes the suggestion, based largely on the evidence from Lyon, that the importation of Italian Dressel 1 amphoras into Gaul is declining rapidly by c. 40 BC. The implications of this for the dating of the Dressel 1s in Britain have yet to be analysed.
  • Comas Solà (1998) describes a Catalan variant of the Dressel 1, found occasionally in Gaul.
